A SECOND EARTHQUAKE WAS FELT ACROSS THE ISLAND IN LESS THAN 24 HRS

    St. George’s, Grenada – Wednesday 22nd August, 2018.

The National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) has received confirmation from the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) that the earthquake felt at 9:27 am today Wednesday 22nd August, 2018 had a magnitude of 5.9.

The data indicates that the origin of the earthquake was 10.60 North Latitude and 62.87 West Longitude just off the coast of Venezuela with a depth of 80 km.

Today’s earthquake is considered an aftershock of the very powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake recorded yesterday in the southern Caribbean.

According to Seismologist at UWI seismic Research center Dr. Joan Latchman, “we can expect to have more aftershocks, because of the depth of the first quake but of a lesser magnitude”.

NaDMA takes this opportunity to remind citizens to be prepared for all hazards that have the potential to affect us.

In the case of earthquakes, DROP, COVER AND HOLD ON a procedure which can be life saving.

DROP -under a sturdy bed, table or desk, COVER your head and torso and HOLD ON to furniture or sit against a wall.

We wish to state clearly that Grenada and its dependencies are NOT under any TSUANMI WATCH OR WARNING as a result of this morning’s earthquake.
